چکیده

A computer is something that computes, and since humans make computations when processing information, humans are computers. What kinds of computations do humans make when they learn languages? Answering this question requires the collaborative efforts of researchers in several different disciplines and sub-disciplines, including language science (e.g. theoretical linguistics, psycholinguistics, language acquisition), computer science, psychology, and cognitive science. The primary purpose of this chapter is explain to developmental psycholinguists and language scientists more generally, the main conclusions and issues in computational learning theories. This chapter is needed because

Acquisition of Desires before Beliefs: A Computational Investigation

The acquisition of Belief verbs lags behind the acquisition of Desire verbs in children. Some psycholinguistic theories attribute this lag to conceptual differences between the two classes, while others suggest that syntactic differences are responsible. Through computational experiments, we show that a probabilistic verb learning model exhibits the pattern of acquisition, even though there is ...

Computational Psycholinguistics

Computational psycholinguistics seeks to build theories of human linguistic processes that take the form of working computational models. These models address processes ranging from word recognition to discourse comprehension, and produce behaviour that constitutes predictions to be compared to human data.

More Than Words: The Role of Multiword Sequences in Language Learning and Use

The ability to convey our thoughts using an infinite number of linguistic expressions is one of the hallmarks of human language. Understanding the nature of the psychological mechanisms and representations that give rise to this unique productivity is a fundamental goal for the cognitive sciences. A long-standing hypothesis is that single words and rules form the basic building blocks of lingui...

Theories of early language acquisition.

What features of brain processing and neural development support linguistic development in young children? To what extent is the profile and timing of linguistic development in young children determined by a pre-ordained genetic programme? Does the environment play a crucial role in determining the patterns of change observed in children growing up? Recent experimental, neuroimaging and computa...
